Forensic students at Huddersfield University were shown how a knowledge about maggots can help solve crime.
Dr Mark Benecke, an international forensic entomologist, introduced the students to the world of maggots, flies and other insects.
He said: "Knowing how insects breed and grow can help us to estimate the time of death of a person and also where they died."
Dr Benecke, who works with various criminal justice departments, including the FBI, emphasised the importance of scientific studies in his line of work.
"Good science is required to find out what probably happened to the unfortunate victims of crime."
